North Korea Fires Missiles Toward Japan

Current Headlines: North Korea fired several missiles toward Japan Friday, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Sources told Kyodo the short-range missiles fired toward the Sea of Japan were launched from the North Korean coast and were believed to be a modified version of the surface-to-ship Silkworm missile.

The Japanese Defense Ministry was analyzing information believed to come from U.S. military satellite images, Kyodo reported.

A source in the Japanese government told the news agency the missiles ''would not pose a threat to Japan-U.S. security.''

North Korea fired off seven missiles July 2006 and launched short-range missiles from its eastern coast in May 2005. The 2006 firings resulted in international sanctions. Kyodo reported that sources said Friday's firings could be part of a drill.
