Democrats: Iraq Fight Not Over

Current Headlines: Democrats in the U.S. Congress said the debate over the war in Iraq is not over with the passage of $100 billion in war funding.

There will be legislation on the floor in the next several months to change the mission, from combat to fighting terrorism, training and diplomatic and force protection. Again, that would require a greatly reduced U.S. forces and coalition forces in Iraq, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who voted against the war spending, said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., supported the bill Thursday but said he preferred one vetoed by U.S. President George Bush that set a timetable for pulling U.S. combat forces out of Iraq.

Senate Democrats will not stop our efforts to change the course of this war until either enough Republicans join with us to reject President Bush's failed policy or we get a new president, Reid said.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who is seeking his party's nomination for president, issued a statement Friday criticizing two Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for voting against the war-funding bill.

I was very disappointed to see Senator Obama and Senator Clinton embrace the policy of surrender by voting against funds to support our brave men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, McCain said.
