White House Hits Back at Carter

May 21, 02:46 PM

Current Headlines: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said in New Orleans that his critical comments about U.S. President George Bush had been careless and misinterpreted.

Carter told NBC's Today show that his remarks to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Saturday, in which he said the Bush administration's foreign policy has been the worst in history, was in response to a question about President Richard Nixon's foreign policy.

What I was actually doing was responding to a question about foreign policy between Richard Nixon and this administration. I think this administration's foreign policy compared to President Nixon's was much worse, Carter said on Today.

Earlier, the White House had fired back at Carter.

Bush spokesman Tony Fratto called Carter's criticism reckless and said the former president has proven to be increasingly irrelevant by making these kinds of comments, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Carter recently told BBC Radio The almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq has been a major tragedy for the world.

Carter was in New Orleans building Habitat for Humanity houses.
