The Google chief executive, Eric Schmidt, received $557,466 in pay last year, nearly all of it to cover personal security expenses. Schmidt, along with the company founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, got a salary of $1 in 2006. Their annual bonuses amounted to $1,723 each, the company based in Mountain View, California, said in a regulatory filing.

Google, the owner of the most popular Internet search engine, said in January 2006 that Schmidt, Brin and Page had agreed to maintain the $1 salaries that they received in 2005. Page and Brin are the largest shareholders in Google, with more than 30 million Class B shares each. Schmidt, 51, has almost 11 million. - Crayton Harrison
