Two N.C. Police Officers Shot Dead

Apr 01, 09:01 PM

Current Headlines: Police in North Carolina Sunday were questioning a suspect in the shooting deaths of two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers.

Chief Darrel Stephens told a news conference Sunday evening that the suspect had not been charged in the slaying of officers Sean Clark and Jeffrey Shelton in east Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer reported.

These situations are very fluid, Stephens said.

Clark and Shelton both died at Carolinas Medical Center early Sunday. They had responded around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of a disturbance at an apartment complex, and were shot during a struggle on the complex parking lot at around 11:15 p.m.

Neither officer fired his weapon and no one else was injured, the Observer reported.

A witness at the apartment complex who declined to give his name told the newspaper he heard five gunshots.

I saw a guy wearing dark clothes run down here, he said. I didn't ever go down there, but somebody said two police were down there dead.

A police spokeswoman said investigators did not believe the officers were lured to the apartment complex as part of an ambush, the newspaper reported.
