Pressel Wins Her First Major

Apr 01, 08:16 PM

Current Headlines: Morgan Pressel Sunday became the youngest woman ever to win a major tournament, taking the Kraft Nabisco Championship by one stroke at Rancho Mirage, Calif.

The 18-year-old Pressel, whose winning score was 3-under 285, won the event after Suzann Pettersen, who had a three-shot lead, collapsed late in the round.

Pettersen just missed a 15-foot par putt at No. 15 for bogey, and then followed with a double-bogey at 16, a bogey at 17 and a par at the 18th hole.

A shocked Pressel watched most of the ending on a clubhouse television.

I don't know what to say, Pressel said.

She knows how bad Pettersen felt because, as a 17-year-old amateur, she was tied for the lead at the 2005 U.S. Women's Open until Birdie Kim made eagle on the 72nd hole to win that event.

Pettersen (74) finished in a three-way tie with Brittany Lincicome and Catriona Matthew for second place at 2-under 286.
