Go Organic! for Earth Day Helps Take Organic Products Mainstream

Mar 30, 08:25 AM

Current Headlines: MINNEAPOLIS, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Today it's becoming easier than ever to find organic products, but despite growing numbers of consumers ready to give organic a try, many feel confused about what organic is all about.

Go Organic! for Earth Day helps consumers cut through the clutter and take the first steps toward making organic products part of their daily lives, http://www.organicearthday.org/.

This April, more than 3,500 grocery stores and 40 leading organic manufacturers will come together for Go Organic! for Earth Day to help consumers discover, understand and ultimately enjoy organic products as part of their daily lives. The initiative is a project of Organic Trade Association, Earth Day Network and MusicMatters.

"Going organic is a growing trend," says Caren Wilcox, OTA's executive director. "OTA has seen an exponential growth in consumer demand over the last few years, fuelled by people's desire for improved personal health and a better environment. Organic products are now available not only at specialty grocery stores and co-ops that championed the cause in the early days but also at mainstream retailers."

The Go Organic! for Earth Day campaign includes events, promotions, organic product sampling and coupons for organic products available at participating retailers throughout April (coupon books available at participating retailers or by calling 1-866-I-GO-ORGA (NIC)).

In addition, chef Akasha Richmond has created an Earth Day menu featuring a day's worth of simple, delicious, organic recipes. Award-winning chef, cookbook author and longtime organics advocate, Rick Bayless, has also created an organic Mexican dish.

This year, Go Organic! offers an opportunity to register for e-Newsletters about organics and a chance to win a trip to The Crossings wellness spa in Austin, Texas. All recipes plus informational materials, a "Test Your Organic Smarts" quiz and a store finder to locate participating retailers can be found at the campaign Web site http://www.organicearthday.org/.

The importance of organic food for babies, infants and young children has also been well noted.

"Children are developing organs to last a lifetime," says Dr. Alan Greene, MD, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. "They're smaller, they have faster metabolisms and because their diets are less varied than an adult's, children are more vulnerable to developmental damage and health problems. By reducing exposure to toxic substances, organic products can help us raise healthy strong children and protect our most treasured resources for the future."

Go Organic! for Earth Day is supported by leading organic manufacturers such as CLIF Bar & Co., Del Monte Foods, Horizon Organic, R.W. Knudsen Family, Santa Cruz Organic, Silk(R) Soymilk, Stonyfield Farm, Earthbound Farm and Organic Valley Family of Farms. Participating retailers include Kroger, Publix, Meijer, Food Lion, H-E-B and ShopRite.
