Rapper Foxy Brown in Broward Court

Current Headlines: By Nikki Waller, The Miami Herald

Mar. 29--The rapper Foxy Brown went before a Broward judge Wednesday afternoon to answer charges that she battered a Pembroke Pines beauty-supply store employee and forcefully resisted arrest.

Brown's hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m., but was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. due to a late plane.

She missed a scheduled arraignment last week, causing Broward Judge Joel Lazarus to issue a warrant for her arrest.

In court Wednesday, Brown's local attorney, Fred Haddad, told Lazarus that Brown did not intentionally miss her court date and said the notice to appear in court was sent to the wrong house.

Lazarus vacated the arrest warrant and reinstated bond for Brown, who said nothing in court.

Police say Brown was applying beauty products in the bathroom of Queen Beauty Supply in February when an employee told her the business was closed and it was time to leave, according to the arrest report. She refused and threw hair glue at the employee, then spat at the man as he called 911, the report said.

She later struggled with a responding police officer, the report said. She was released on a $1,500 bond.

Brown was charged in February with battery and resisting arrest without violence. Judge Joel Lazarus issued the bench warrant after she did not appear in court in Fort Lauderdale.

Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, is known for her sexy outfits and racy lyrics. She was the first woman to debut a rap album at No. 1 on the Billboard charts -- 1999's Chyna Doll.

Her failure to appear in Fort Lauderdale could have a serious effect on other sentences she's currently serving in New York.

Earlier this month, Brown pleaded guilty to a probation violation for leaving New York state without permission. In that hearing, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson decided not to add to Brown's probation time, but warned Brown that any further probation infractions could result in a one-year jail sentence.

In 2004, Brown was sentenced to probation and anger management classes after a fight at a Chelsea nail salon.
