Nine Officers Bungled Tillman Death Info

Mar 27, 01:07 PM

Current Headlines: The U.S. Army's inspector general and Criminal Investigation Command named nine officers who misreported the death of ex-NFL player Cpl. Pat Tillman.

The nine include four generals who could face corrective action for not following regulations in investigating the friendly fire death of Tillman in Afghanistan in April 2004.

Tillman was killed during a fire fight by fellow Army Rangers but his family was not told it was friendly fire until 35 days after his death. An Afghan soldier was also killed and another U.S. soldier injured in the incident.

The investigation released Monday said while there had been no attempt by officers to conceal the circumstances of Tillman's death, inadequate initial investigations contributed to the inaccuracies, misunderstandings and perceptions of concealment, CNN reported.

The Army will decide what, if any action to take against the nine officers.

Acting Army Secretary Pete Geren said Tillman's posthumous Silver Star will stand but the citation will be revised, the report said.

After the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Tillman abandoned a multimillion-dollar contract as a safety with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals to join the Army.
