Oklahoma's Population Increases

Oklahoma's population increased 3.73 percent from the April 2000 Census to July 2006.

The state population also increased 1 percent from July 2005 to July 2006, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Several counties in the state recorded population increases from 2000 to 2006.

Six counties had increases of more than 10 percent.

Rogers County's population increased 16.7 percent from 2000 to 2006, more than any of the state's 77 counties. Other counties with sharp increases included Canadian, 15.6 percent; Wagoner, 15.3 percent; McClain, 11.9 percent; Grady, 10.9 percent; and Marshall, 10.4 percent.

Forty-two counties gained population between 2000 and 2006 while 35 counties lost population.

According to the estimates, the largest counties in the state during 2006 were Oklahoma County with a population of 691,300; Tulsa County, 577,800; Cleveland County, 228,600; Comanche County, 109,200; and Canadian County, 101,300. That is the first time Canadian County has surpassed the 100,000 mark.

The smallest counties for 2006 were Cimarron County with a population of 2,800; Harmon County, 3,000; Roger Mills County, 3,300; Harper County, 3,300; and Ellis County, 3,900.

Population estimates by age, gender and race and estimates by place will be released this summer.
