Current Headlines: Japan's elderly accounted for a record 20.8 per cent of the country's population last year, the government said, underscoring a rapidly ageing society.

Japan's population stood at an estimated 127.77 million as of October 1, 2006, slightly up by 1,500 from a year earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

Of the total, those aged 65 or older accounted for 26.6 million.
