GREEN campaigner Al Gore has been accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed he uses 20 times more power at home than the US national average.

The former vice-president inspired and starred in climate change movie An Inconvenient Truth, which won Best Documentary at the Oscars.

Yet he lives in a 20-room mansion in Nashville, Tennessee, with heated pool, electric gates and gas lamps which run up power bills of pounds 15,000 a year.

Public utility records show the Gore family used 221,000 kilowatt- hours of power in 2006. The national average is 10,656 kilowatt- hours.

Drew Johnson, of Tennessee's Centre for Policy Research, which found the data, said: "He tells others how to live but is not following his own rules."

A spokesman for Mr Gore said that both he and his wife Tipper worked from home and were making it more energy-efficient with measures including solar panels.
